Artist Residency at The Arctic Hideaway, Norway
From the end of April 2026, Lucy Algar undertook a two-week artist residency at The Arctic Hideaway on the island of Sørvær in the Fleinvær archipelago, Norway. This residency offered her time and space to delve deeply into mark making and the ways in which the environment, the sea and the weather can interact with and affect the outcome of drawings.
Working from this remote coastal setting, Lucy developed a series of drawings and scenographic interventions in response to the surrounding landscape. Over the course of the residency, the shifting conditions of snow, sun, strong winds and moments of early spring warmth shaped her experience of the site. Drawing outdoors, she responded to the stark and expansive surroundings, accompanied by the sound of curlews across the shoreline.
Lucy was particularly excited to let go and allow the drawings to emerge through interactions with rain, snow, hail and seawater. This residency forms part of her ongoing exploration of drawing as a live and responsive practice, grounded in place, movement and atmosphere.
